Eugene Hickey
Eugene is a qualified barrister with over 20 years' experience having been called to the Bar in 1988. Eugene was a member of a leading set of Barristers' Chambers (No5 Chambers) for over 15 years prior to joining Kangs Solicitors.
Eugene main area of expertise is in serious crime. He has extensive experience of complex and serious fraud, large scale drug conspiracies and importations as well as particularly grave offences of violence such as Murder and Manslaughter. His work also covers large scale public order offences and serious sexual offences such as rape. He also deals with regulatory work.
Serious Fraud:
Eugene has considerable experience of complex fraud cases. He has for example, represented solicitors and other professionals accused of fraud as well as business defendants accused of conspiracies to defraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering. As well as such "white collar" crime cases Eugene has also represented members of criminal gangs in large scale conspiracies to steal and handle stolen goods.
Violent Offences:
Eugene has appeared in a whole range of cases involving offences of violence including numerous Murder cases as well as cases involving Manslaughter, Death by Dangerous Driving, GBH with Intent, Arson with Intent and other like offences. In his practice he also deals with child cruelty, large scale football disorder, gang violence and armed robberies.
Sexual Offences:
Eugene has conducted numerous cases involving the offences of rape, indecent assault and sexual abuse against children. He was defence counsel in the case of R v Newbon which led to his client being acquitted as a result of a half time submission in which he highlighted a major flaw in the Sexual Offences Act 2003. As a result of this case and others that followed it, Parliament has sought to clarify the position in the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 S55.
Regulatory Crime:
Eugene has been involved in many cases involving Health and Safety, including fatalities, Trading Standards, environmental protection and food safety.
